Georg Feuerstein's Yoga Philosophy Teacher Training Manual is now available Can't Post

Georg Feuerstein, my husband, recently completed a training manual on Yoga philosophy/history adaptable to the 200- and 500-hour levels. Until his semi-retirement in 2004, Georg often taught at various programs in the United States. He also designed and conducted a two-year 800-hour teacher training program himself, which involved a considerable number of hours on Yoga philosophy/history. He knows first-hand what students (and often) teachers do not know and how to teach what some find difficult to learn.

Being aware of the frequently inadequate coverage of philosophy/history in existing teacher training programs, he designed a 160-page manual that introduces all the essential elements. The manual is based on his forty-year study and practice of Yoga. Anyone familiar with his over thirty published books, including The Yoga Tradition, The Shambhala Encyclopedia of Yoga, and Yoga Morality, will know that the manual can be expected to be of the same high quality as all his writings.

Apart from being a set requirement by the Yoga Alliance (U.S.A.) for Yoga teacher training programs, the study of Yoga philosophy has traditionally been an integral part of the Yoga tradition. Surely, we all can do with a healthy dose of philosophy, which helps us respond meaningfully to the Big Questions of life. To know something about the philosophy and history of Yoga can only further our right relationship to yogic practice!

The manual contains the following chapters:

Preface by the Author
Further Reading and Listening
1. Health Beyond Posture
2. The Philosophy of Posture, Posture as Philosophy
3. What Is Yoga?
4. Ten Fundamental Principles of Yoga
5. In Praise of the Philosophical Life
6. Why Study Yoga Philosophy?
7. The Seven Stages of Psychospiritual Maturation
8. A Bird’s-Eye View of the History of Yoga
9. The Yoga of the Vedas and Upanishads
10. The Bhagavad-Gītā and Its Teachings
11. The System of Patanjali’s Classical Yoga
12. Tantra: Revelation for the Kali-Yuga
13. The History and Theory of Hatha-Yoga
14. The Technology of Traditional Hatha-Yoga
15. Ethical Guidelines for Yoga Teachers

The manual includes many inspiring quotes from Yoga masters and numerous diagrams that make assimilation of the materials easier. It also includes excerpts of the most significant portions of Patanjali’s Yoga-Sutra and the Bhagavad-Gita. No other reading materials are needed, unless they are part of your course requirements. However, ample suggestions for further study are given.

Each chapter in the manual has a number of questions with which students can test how well they have assimilated the knowledge provided in a given chapter. Each chapter, moreover, has suggestions for group discussion, which Georg’s former students have found both very helpful and enjoyable. These discussions can make up the required face-to-face (“contact hours”) component of trainings.

The materials are presented in a straightforward manner, focusing on essentials and without digressing into extraneous matters. Yoga philosophy is made as simple as possible without, however, sacrificing significant details or spiritual quality. His comprehensive knowledge of Yoga allows him to be clear and make important connections for students. I personally consider this manual to be Georg’s most significant contribution to the educational aspect of the contemporary Yoga movement thus far.

You can view sample pages from the manual online at our website (www.traditionalyogastudies.com/philosophy_manual.html).

If you have never taught the philosophy/history segment yourself, you will be able to do so after working through the manual yourself and with the help of the simple guidelines provided to teachers.

Each student is expected to have his or her own manual. It is entirely up to the teacher whether he or she prefers to include the price of the manuals in the cost of the teacher training program or charges students individually. However, all orders must be placed by the teacher.

For the 500-hour training, students will also have to purchase Georg’s book Yoga Morality (available from Hohm Press or from us at $19.95 plus shipping).

The spiral-bound and beautifully typeset manual, which is printed on 100% recycled paper, is available at CAN $60.00 (US $55.00). You must place a minimum order of six copies of the manual (including your own). This is meant to discourage orders for insincere purposes. Please note that there is no discount on additional copies.

You are also expected to sign an agreement with TYS that you will not photocopy the manual or lend it to others who might photocopy it, or to reuse manuals in future trainings. We feel that the time-consuming work that has gone into the creation of the manual deserves a proper ethical/yogic response, which includes respecting existing copyright laws. (Unfortunately, past experience forces TYS to adopt this policy.)

If you have any questions, I would be glad to respond to you by email at tyslearning@sasktel.net.
I look forward to hearing from you.
