Urdhva Dandasana Can't Post

This is the one where you're in headstand and drop your legs to a right angle, sort of like halasana in Salamba Sirsasana.

The problem is this: so easy coming down, so hard going up!

Any suggestions for going up via straight legs, and pausing for even the briefest moment in Urdhva Dandasana? I realize the hips need to pivot back to balance the weight, but I think there must be some other finagling that needs doing.

Coming down, the trick seems to be to really dig into the floor with the forearms and hands, so the neck doesn't take the strain. And, again, the hip movement's key. The photo in Light on Yoga shows it clearly.

Namaste,

Rod

Going up with straight legs is all core strength for me, you'll feel it in your abdominal region (and perhaps quads too). The trick is walking your feet toward your torso until your torso is in it's final straight position, from there it's just a gentle, controlled movement to lift your feet from the ground. Aaahhh....
namaste,
