Asana not important Can't Post

Most Western practice of Yoga only consists of asanas. I have been told that historically asana was a very unimportant part of Yoga, and that many yogis didn't even do them, and even frowned upon them. Is that true?

Totally probable.
As much as I know is that asana is the tip of the iceberg. I've actually gone back to doing Western style exercise for the moment, as I think the West has alot to offer and can be incorporated with the breath practices from yoga, and focusing my
learning in yoga more on historical/philosophical traditions such as the upanishads and the Gita.
I've heard some teachers really disparage the way yoga has become mostly about asana in the West, but personally I don't think it is a bad thing - you have to start somewhere and the tradition is so rich and varied it is difficult to take it all in.
Regards, Carolyn.
