EGO IS NOT A DIRTY WORD Can't Post

During our discussion about the ego on Wedneday. the song "Ego is not a dirty word" by Skyhooks was going over and over in my mind. Could not remember the lyrics so with the help of my son managed to downlaod them, and are as follows"-

If I did not have an ego I would not be here tonight
If I did not have an ego I might not think I was right
If you did not have an ego you might not care the way you dressed
If you did not have an ego you'd just be like the rest.

Chorus

Ego is not a dirty word
Ego is not a dirty word
Ego is not a dirty word
Don't you believe what you've seen or heard

If Jesus had an ego he'd still be alive today
And if Nixon had an ego he might not be in decay
If you did not have an ego you might not care too much who won
If I did not have an ego I might just use a gun

Chorus

Some people keep their egos in a bottom drawer
A fridge full of Leonard Cohen
Have to get drunk just to walk out the door
Stay drunk to keep on going'
So if you got an ego
You better keep it in good shape
Exercise it daily
And get it down on tape

Chorus

......Food for Thought

Namaste

Re: [Linda] EGO IS NOT A DIRTY WORD [In reply to] Can't Post

I've been alot nicer to my ego over the last couple of days and it seems to be treating me well. How is everone else going with their egos? Are you being kind to your "greatest ally"? I'm singing in my head 'ego is not a dirty word' but every time the song pops up so does Red Simons face!!!

Re: [Bec] EGO IS NOT A DIRTY WORD [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for those lyrics Linda - they were going through my mind in class too. I think it's important to make the distinction between ego - the part of the mind, which can be a good thing as it is there to proctect us from harm even if it does it in not very helpful ways sometimes, and egocentrisim - the behaviour whereby people think they are the only person in the world like a 3 year old. Those things get confused sometimes. I know for example of people with high egocentrism levels, who have low self esteem and so generally not a good sense of ego.

Anyway I'm making friends with mine. I had a good long talk to it, thanked it for it's past work in protecting me from perceived threats to my fragile little self, told it that I honoured and accepted it as part of me but that it had to back off in some areas and not protect me from things that were emotionally threatening to me as wee kiddie and that I was a big person now and could make decisions without it's reactive input, thanks very much. I'm happy to report we have been getting on much better ever sinceWink

IMO ego is how we uniquely express in the world.
Everyone loves themselves first. Healthy body/mind/spirit loves themselves first. Does this sound too narcissist?.
