Breath: The Essence of Yoga Can't Post

I used to have asthma. I used to struggle with the breath, sometimes as if there were a battle I had to win in order to survive. Through yoga, particularly through pranayam, my breath has become my greatest friend. I no longer struggle to breathe, nor do I fear letting go of the exhalation fully, as I have learned to trust that each new inhalation will come, automatically, when I let the exhalation be full and complete. I travelled to India with a bag full of medication and a series of instructions from my Doctor about how to survive in that most polluted of countries, and instead, I found pranayam, and have not used any asthma medication since! Ahhhh, the freedom of it!!!

I've just discovered the most beautiful book celebrating the inner stillness that comes from working with the breath... it's called "Breath: The Essence of Yoga" by Sandra Sabatini. The entire book is a series of small reflections, almost like poetry, which focus on the breath. Here's a sample...

"observe the breath
as if it were under a magnifying glass
be interested -
as if it were something foreign, unknown
be curious
as to what happens
every time you breathe in
and breathe out
so that you can see every step

just watch
this rhythmical dance between
the external world
and the inner world this exchange that takes place all the time".

Aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... just make me wanna breathe, and breathe, and breathe...

And another one:

"in yoga practice
you try to reach that centre inside your body
from which it is possible to expand...
in yoga, with listening, with attention
with the clarity that comes from the practice
slowly slowly slowly
you touch the spot from which you can expand
into the ground and into space"

What about you? What does the breath mean do you?

Thanks for your lovely post and extracts, it manages to describe the transformative power of the breath in a beautiful, simple form.

Re: [Jjay] Breath: The Essence of Yoga [In reply to] Can't Post

Whenever I focus on my breath it suddenly gets laboured and I start feeling short of breath. I tend to hold onto my breath after the inhalation and before exhalation. I notice this especially when counting my breaths during asana. I have read that Iyengar recommends this as an exercise but I think this is how I breath all the time and I don't think it is necessarily good for me. I think the pattern of my breath is a symptom of my personality (I hold onto myself very tightly and don't give much out)

Re: [Eveline] Breath: The Essence of Yoga [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Eveline,
I know for me it really helps to notice how I conceptualise the process of Pranayama, instead of 'holding' the breath I like to think of it as 'suspending' the breath... a much gentler and less force-based approach. I read in one of the Bihar School of Yoga books that the breath is the only system of the body that is both automatic and within our control, so I figure all we can really do with the control of our breath is to enhance what it does naturally - kinda takes a little of the pressure off our Pranayam practice I think. After all, we already know HOW to breathe, but with practice, we can learn to do it with so much more richness and fullness.
If holding the breath is your pattern, maybe it might help to focus more on the flow of the breath - ie. Ashtanga Vinyasa style. I LOVE using the flow of the Ujjayi breath in my practice, and have learnt to really focus on the letting go with the exhalation, allowing the inhalation to follow of its own accord.
I've learned so much about my breath in the Pranayam classes in the CAE course... how fortunate we are!

I have that book its wonderfull isn't it?? you read it and you feal all light inside, just from reading it.

I find Pranayam to be very stong and powerfull it really really helps me with my downwards wind, which seems if its possible to get stuck. I get my periods very very iregularly (sorry boys) and sometimes I get pains and a huge bloated tummy and I can tell its comming but it seems to be stuck. I session of Pranayam and the fload gates open, sometimes I don't even get all the way through.

It may seem crazy but its just what I have found in the past.

Hey Bonnie - did you just stumble across the book like I did, or were you recommended it?
It's so precious... I lay in bed in the morning and read it before I get up, and call that my pranayam practice... sometimes!

As for opening the gates with Pranayam... know what you mean... all kinda gates!

Janet.

Now you have me singing to myself... "I'm in the mood, for breathing" in a daggy 80's (or was it 70's?) tune! I'm easily amused on a friday afternoon before a weeks holiday... aahhhhh, long morning asana practices... followed by long meditation and pranayam... down the road to my favourite cafe for chai and more pranayam book... aaaaaaauuuuuummmmmmmmm!!!Sly
