New here & have a question... Can't Post

Hi! My name is Lauren, and I'm new to this forum, and a brand new baby RYT. I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone here and learning from you.

Last night, one of my students asked me a question that stumped me, although it seemed really simple. We had been working on Salabhasana - Locust Pose -- and she told me after class that lying face down on her mat is really uncomfortable because it mashes her breasts. (sorry to be so personal in my very first postBlush ). Several of my students reported the same problem.

We weren't face down for more than a few minutes...but I did ask the students to talk to me about any discomfort they have during class.

Anyone have any advice for students with this difficulty? Thanks so much!!

Hi Lauren!

Do you still check this forum? I'm a fairly new instructor too and have created a group forum for teachers to talk about issues such as this. I would love for you to join the group!

Hi Lauren, being a mother who also practses I know how she feels. The main reason for this will be the fact that the breasts are gorged with milk at this time for her and her breasts are probably uncomfortable a lot of the time. Any pressure on them is going to be a painful experience and really not a good thing.I would avoid any such postures and give her something else. During her pregnancy she will have had to very much modify her practise and now she will need to get back to it slowly, listening to her body. Remember aswell that bandha control is very much weakened by pregnancy and birth so beware of hard backbends, again allowing her to come back to it slowly. There is also the slight possibility of hernia occuring if anything too strenuous is attempted, again listening to her body, regaining bandha control and encourage her to work with the breath so she is internally focused.
as for salabhasana and breast size, I have friends who are well sized and have no problem with it as long as there is no breast tenderness for other reasons.
