would love some info abou the vayus Can't Post

I've been trying to understand the functional interplay between the vayus
eg. if you have picked up a stomach bug and are vomiting and have diarrhoa (very pretty example i know, but it was the best i could come up with - sorry!), What is happening to the vayus?
Would it be that prana vayu reduces, allowing things to leave the body before putting anything else in, i guess then apana vayu would be working quite strongly as would be udana vayu, maybe? So then would samana vayu be unbalanced until the bug passed? And what then of vyana vayu? Is this how it works?

Would love to hear other people's thoughts...

This page has a good description of the Vayus.

Like everything else it's about balance I suppose. A stomach bug would initially effect samana vayu, both because this is where the problem is physically and because this vayu acts as a sort of control centre. It would rally the help of apana (down) and udana (up) vayu to expel the toxin. Whilst this process is occurring I would imagine vyana vayu would slow down because the digestion is now not providing the same amount of nutrients, and maybe also to prevent the further spread of toxins throughout the body. I know I feel really internal when I'm ill which sounds like prana has also slowed down. Because prana vayu brings in energy perhaps exercises to stimulate this vayu would be what's needed at such a time.

Hi Rach! I really don't feel all that experty on the vayus, but my gut feeling on the way they work is that they like the gunas and other systems that we looked at in western physiology - are in constant interplay and trying maintain homeostasis of body functions, therefore you would be correct in saying they are all pitching in as necessary to balance the system. In fact i see the vayus essentially as the yogic version of homeostasis - but I could be really really wrong on this

Hi Ladies,
Excellent work !!!! The advise and sharing of knowledge and perspective is perfect. Continue to think in the these terms, and you are well on the way to understanding the Vayus. These considerations are what we will be discussing and exploring more of in our next yogic physiology class. Both Eveline and Nadine's sharing is perfect. Please keep in mind that the vayus are the winds which direct pranic energy through the subtle body in a particular direction and flow. If samana is out of balance, and this is the wind which balances prana vayu(what comes in) and apana vayu(what moves down and out) then the others will be affected as well. Vyana vayu will not be as strong a wind or force as all the energy is being directed down and out (apana) or even up and out (udana) in the case of vomiting, and until the balance and homeostasis is established again, all vayus will be out of balance and the pranic flow will not be working optimally. Consider that if samana vayu balances prana and apana vayus, and apana is working overtime, then initially samana needs to establish that balance again which may take time until the negative or stagant energy is moved (dross) but then what comes in (prana) is really vital at this time ...breath...water...clean pure energetic foods, and gentle practice that stimulates prana vayu and facilitates samana vayu to create that balance again. You are all doing really well!
Well done...keep up the good work,
Love and light to you,
Andrew
